Guardian Giving Back
Guardians from Space Training and Readiness Command (STARCOM) and the United States Air Force Academy’s (USAFA) Space Team, visited Colorado’s Cripple Creek Victor school district to interact with more than 100 students, discussing multiple Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) concepts, as well as the United States Space Force
“Giving back to the community is part of the Guardian Ideal and is representative of the kind of culture we’re fostering in the Space Force,” said Space Force Lt. Col. Adam Wasinger, a member of STARCOM’s Delta 13, Detachment 1. “These students are the future of our country and were grateful for the opportunity to spend time with them and recognize their hard work.”

In addition to discussion around STEM related topics, the students divided into three teams--each building and launching a custom rocket constructed from a 2-liter soda bottle in friendly, team-inspired competition.

“I was particularly excited to support this event in Cripple Creek because I’m from a small town and understand the challenges that can present,” said Space Force Maj. Taylor Duncan, another member of STARCOM’s Delta 13, Detachment 1. “When I was growing up, I was always grateful to learn about opportunities available to me from around the world, and I hope to inspire these students by letting them know they too can play an active role in the future of space.”

Also attending the community engagement was Space Force Capt. Yulonda McGee who explained to the students how cell phones and daily capabilities are enhanced with Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites, flown out of Schriever Space Force Base.
