Space Training and Readiness Command (STARCOM) hosted its first commander’s conference at various locations on Vandenberg SFB, Nov. 3-5. Brig. Gen. Shawn N. Bratton, STARCOM Commander, gathered his commanders and senior enlisted leaders together to discuss progress on achieving STARCOM’s mission to prepare every Guardian to prevail in competition and conflict in the space domain.

Discussion topics included hiring, basing, and funding as they relate to STARCOM’s five mission areas: training, doctrine, range, test and evaluation, and education. These five areas are represented within STARCOM by operational units called a Deltas, each of which formally stood up between Aug. 27 and Sept. 30, following STARCOM’s historic activation on August 23.

“Now that STARCOM is activated and our five Deltas are up and running, the conference was a great opportunity to bring our leaders together to discuss what we’ve accomplished as a command and what lies ahead,“ Bratton said. “I treasure opportunities like these to get our senior leaders in the same room, especially during the early stages of an organization. It’s critical to establishing the focus and culture we want in our command.”

Holding the conference at Vandenberg afforded STARCOM leaders the opportunity to interact with young Guardians who are training to become space operators. STARCOM leaders observed instructors and students in various classes including “Satellite Systems Fundamentals” and “Space Warfighting Planning,” among others.
“The conference afforded our team the tremendous opportunity to see our amazing instructor cadre in action, preparing the next generation of space operations professionals” said Chief Master Sergeant James Seballes, STARCOM Senior Enlisted Leader. “Seeing what is being done to ingrain our Guardian culture, and invest in the human capital of the Space Force firsthand was inspiring”

Near the end of the conference, STARCOM leaders were treated to an up-close look at the prototype Space Force dress uniform during an unexpected but much welcomed visit by two Guardians modelling the new uniform at a nearby event.

“The Space Force we shape today will impact how the nation defends the space domain well into the future,” Bratton said. “STARCOM is a big part of laying that foundation by preparing every Guardian, whether that’s through foundational training like we saw during our recent Commander’s Conference, or through STARCOM’s other activities like professional military education or real-world exercises and experiments.”
